ACHIEVE Kids Tri opened it's first camp in Waterbury, Connecticut in 2010, made possible by a seed grant from USAT.  Working in partnership with the Greater Waterbury YMCA, ACHIEVE successfully trained 29 youth athletes at the downtown YMCA, preparing them for the camp-ending race at beautiful Camp Mataucha.  Under the leadership of camp director and head coach Susanne Navas, assisted by a dedicated group of assistant coaches and volunteers, all the youth athletes successfully completed the program and the race.  ACHIEVE is looking forward to continuing this success in 2011 with plans for expansion in 2012.

Thanks to a generous grant by USA Triathlon, ACHIEVE Waterbury kicked off with one camp 2010 and was such a success that it will return in 2011.  ACHIEVE Waterbury is possible thanks to the hard efforts of founder Susanne Navas and the beneficial partnership with the YMCA of Greater Waterbury.  The YMCA facility provided all of the necessary space and resources to allow the ACHIEVE athletes to effectively train for their first triathlon.

Susan Navas

Founder, ACHIEVE Waterbury, CT

Susanne is the lead women responsible for bringing the first ACHIEVE Kids Tri Camp to Waterbury, CT in 2010.  Her efforts were so well received by the community that she will be starting a second camp in 2011.

When asked why she was inspired to get involved with ACHIEVE Kids Tri, she said:

“On my way home to CT from competing in Ironman Cozumel 2009, I was reading a back issue of Triathlon Life Magazine and saw a small blurb on ACHIEVE.  Impressed with its mission, which appealed to my desire to bring the sport of triathlon to underprivileged youth, I had checked out their website before even unpacking my race gear.  I have mentored youth in Waterbury, CT for several years, many of whom are teen moms, and it is very important to me to teach people the importance of setting goals and of taking care of our health through fitness and diet.  ACHIEVE does all of this, in a well-organized, replicable, effective manner.  If I can help kids and their families in CT realize that anything is achievable, I will indeed have accomplished one of my own life's goals.”
