Last Friday, August 5, more than 100 Washington, D.C. area youth competed in all three sports at the Anacostia Recreation Center through ACHIEVE Youth Triathlon Summer Camp. ACHIEVE is a non-profit organization that offers youth ages 9 to 14 a free summer camp to expose kids to the many benefits that come from participation in endurance sports. They have incorporated the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA) in all of their camp site programs this summer and their Executive Director, Molly Quinn, received this year’s Community Leadership Award from the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition.

They trained four hours a day, five days a week for the last six weeks. They swam, they biked, they ran every day, and often made the long, grueling run from the Waterbury YMCA up Cooke Street to Fulton Park. Saturday, you might say, was graduation day. Instead of diplomas, they received gold medals, and experiences and lessons to carry for a lifetime.

With triathlons now topping the list as the fastest growing sport in the US, one group of local kids is jumping on the bandwagon early and will spend six weeks learning the ropes of the swim, bike, run combination to complete a real triathlon on August 6.

WASHINGTON, DC —The President’s Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition (PCFSN) has selected Molly Quinn, Executive Director of ACHIEVE Kids Tri, Inc., a youth summer program that promotes fitness and nutrition through triathlon training, to receive a 2011 PCFSN Community Leadership Award. The award is given annually to individuals who improve the lives of individuals within their community by providing or enhancing opportunities to engage insports, physical activities, fitness or nutrition-related programs.
